  • New Members Elected to UN Committee on the Rights of the Child
    The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, the body that monitors states' compliance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, held elections in New York recently for nine new members in accordance with Article 45 of the Convention.

    Of the seven Committee members, running for re-election, five were re-elected in the first round of voting. Ms. Ghalia Al-Thani (Qatar) received the most votes with 136 followed immediately by Ms. Lucy Smith (Norway) with 134. Also re-elected in the first round of voting was Ms. Yanghee Lee (Republic of Korea) with 110 votes, Ms. Joyce Aluoch (Kenya) with 106 votes, and Ms. Nevena Vuckovic-Sahovic (Serbia and Montenegro) with 100 votes. Mr. Ibrahmin Al-Sheddi (Saudi Arabia) lost in the second round of voting and Ms. Marilia Sardenberg (Brazil), who was attempting an unprecedented fourth term, was eliminated after the first round. Mr. Luigi Citarella (Italy) and Ms. Saisuree Chutikul (Thailand) did not run for re-election.
