Leanne Tonkin holds a PhD in the field of Education, Curriculum, Teaching and Learning from the Ontario Institute of Education of the University of Toronto. During Leanne’s doctorate studies, she earned an Association Montessori Internationale Primary Diploma to help her carry out whole research practices with children in India who are seasoned secular mindful practitioners. The research project led her to live in India for three consecutive years to support the work with the children in body, mind and spirit. The children’s lived experiences reveal the power of the child’s mind to stop for a fraction of a second and make choices of benefit to themselves, others and environment. At an early age, Leanne learned indirectly from her parents that children and young people’s lives matter, and also that adults can discern why they matter through engaging meaningfully with them. Today, Leanne feels responsible for the well-being of children and young people the world over. Naturally, she is grateful for the opportunity to join IICRD and its work with and for children, families and communities.
