This e-learning course focuses on sexual abuse and exploitation of children in all settings, with special emphasis on commercial sexual exploitation of children. The course addresses sexual abuse and exploitation of children in various forms, namely – at home, at the work place, in institutional settings, on the streets, due to religious and cultural practices, and others. An entire segment will be devoted to commercial sexual exploitation covering child prostitution; child sex abuse images (child pornography); exploitation of children in travel and tourism (child sex – tourism); sexual abuse and exploitation of children through the Internet and other information and communication technologies. The course will look closely at the entire gamut of international legal framework on the ‘rights of children’ and ‘protection of children’ and the special status of child victims at the various stages of the criminal justice process. The course will also address the broad spectrum of gender based abuse and discrimination vis-à-vis the sexual exploitation of children. The course will finally examine roles and responsibilities of government, law enforcement, the international community,  civil society and individual actors in addressing the problem and will conclude with strategies and ‘good practices’ that have proven effective in different parts of the world. Strong emphasis will be placed throughout the course not only on theory and legal frameworks, but also on case studies resourced globally.
